Letter to School Publication Faculty Adviser

Dear School Publication Faculty Adviser,

How does your school yearbook, magazine or newspaper compare to other school publications throughout the country? How are these other faculty advisers and student staffs getting ideas for the improvement of their publications?

The quality of a school's publications and how they present themselves to their reading community is a guidepost to the quality of the publishing school. Many studies have shown that the school yearbook is the one single item most often saved by graduates and can be located by most people even ten years later. For these reasons, and if you have not used our service in the past, we would like to introduce you to our SCHOLASTIC REVIEW AND CONTEST.

Our service, in the form of a CONTEST, provides advice on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, cover design, advertising placement, photography and a variety of other useful items. When a school is spending several thousand dollars on a school publication, this service more than pays for itself in the help it provides in the year-to-year improvement in the style, format, contents, and presentation of the school yearbook or magazine.

Each school yearbook and magazine is scored on a point system and is awarded a FIRST, SECOND, or THIRD PLACE in its classification. Those school publications with special and outstanding design and content may receive a FIRST PLACE WITH SPECIAL MERIT. Other entries for special category award consideration are explained on the entry application.

The AWARD CERTIFICATE is beautifully designed and is usually framed and prominently displayed in the school.

Included with the point scores and awards is a written review with suggestions, hints for improvement, and encouragement for your student staff and editors. Our panel of judges are educators and are themselves very experienced faculty advisers for scholastic publications. This ensures the production of critiques and awards that are sensitive to school budgetary limitations and scholastic printing problems.

The AWARDS booklet, THE AMERICAN SCHOLASTIC JOURNALIST, listing the hundreds of award winners, will be published in late December for yearbooks and magazines and in late April for newspapers. It will be sent to all participating schools and will include the award and score book for each individual school.

We hope you and your school administration encourage your student editors and staff to enter your school yearbook and magazine in our annual SCHOOL YEARBOOK REVIEW/CONTEST. Please note that each publication type needs a different entry form and fee. The entry form may be duplicated and used for all publications.

SUGGESTED DEADLINE FOR the SCHOOL YEARBOOKS and MAGAZINES REVIEW/CONTEST WILL BE October 15th. Need more time? Please email us.

If your yearbook or magazine publication is a summer or fall delivery, please note this in the box provided on the entry form, telling us the approximate date of arrival. Send the entry form and fee before July 1st to reserve your late judging.
